Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974) Movie Poster

In school, I was given a project to create a movie poster for one of my favorite films with a modern design. This project started with developing visual representation of the movie Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974). I focused on the three main monsters who would end up fighting at the end, and included elements from the movie that were key to the plot.

Concept & Process

I developed the majority of the piece in illustrator, which ended up being far more tedious than I could have imagined, but the results ended up being very crisp. I additionally chose to stick with the original Japanese title as I felt the monsters in the poster were iconic enough that English wasn’t needed. The final step was adding textures and color filters to give the piece a more vintage feel as though it was printed in 1974 and had seen some better days after being weathered down a bit.

Movie in Motion

As an extra component developed after the main project was completed, I found that it would be beneficial to animate the elements of the poster as if there were to be used in promotional material for the movie. My goal here was to continue with the vintage feel by adding film grain elements. I additionally added slight movement to each elements, such as the monsters and text, to emulate traditional animation where painted cels would move slightly frame by frame.
